John's Story

John Wells

As a young man with autism and a sense of adventure, John followed the recommendation of his counselor at Thresholds to check out the Unforgettable Aktion Club at Disability Advocates.  Since John enjoys meeting new people and socializing, the Unforgettable Aktion Club was right up his alley.  He liked what he found.

John is originally from Cuba .  Now, at the age of 24, he currently resides with his parents and a brother.  Not only is John a member of the Unforgettable Aktion Club, he also works in a downtown restaurant, creates origami, dances at Arthur Murray’s dance studio and shooting hoops with his brother.  His sense of adventure is closely accompanied by his sense of independence.  John takes The Rapids city bus wherever he needs to go.

When asked why he likes coming to DAKC, he uses words like independence, self esteem and self confidence.  He likes, “being treated as an equal, meeting new people and being part of the larger community.

For John, DAKC and the Unforgettable Aktion Club were exactly what he was seeking.  “DAKC has a friendly environment and it feels safe to be myself without being judged.”
